Friends of the Sahel

A 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization

The Friends of the Sahel, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization aimed at building solidarity and raising awareness of rapidly developing countries in the Sahel region of Africa. Since September 2023, this organization utilized its resources to establish diplomatic ties with Sahelian countries we deem responsive to the needs of its citizens.

The Friends of the Sahel recognizes that the continent of Africa stands at a pivotal juncture, teeming with enthusiasm and potential as reflected in its vibrant youth. Hence, the time is ripe to help build bridges between Africa and its Diaspora, especially among younger generations in the United States, through cultural exchange and the promotion of STEM education—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The Friends of the Sahel understands for people of African descent to play a leading role in the modern world, mastery of STEM is paramount.

Unfortunately, according to a UNESCO report, sub-Saharan Africa has the lowest researcher density globally, with 89 researchers per million inhabitants compared to a world average of 1,770.

But the promotion of STEM is not merely about creating scientists, engineers or academics; it’s about fostering a generation of problem-solving, critical thinkers, equipped with innovative skills and statesmanship necessary to address complex global challenges. In addition, graduates of STEM can help create an environment conducive to sustainable agricultural practices that will enhance food security and promote economic stability.
